Dr. Philip Popham

I was a customer of GK in 1982-1989 when I had just started as a junior doctor at St Thomas' Hospital. I lived In Balham so the journey to and from work took me past the shop every day. Obviously it was required that I stop on the way home to buy yet another pair of gloves/a helmet/new Rukka oversuit every few days. No wonder I never seemed to have any money. I blame Barry in the Clothing Dept because he was a very good salesman.

I also had my bikes serviced and repaired after accidents there, initially a BMW R100RS, then a K100RS and finally the K75S which I bought from GK in 1986 and shipped out to Sydney when I worked there in 1987 for a year. The beach shot is at Palm Beach north Sydney where they filmed Hone and Away, I think. You can just make out the GK UK licence plate in addition to the New South Wales plate which I had to get as well.

I shipped it back to the UK and continued riding it when we moved to Cambridge but finally sold it when we had children. It took another 15 years for me to get back into riding again when, of course, it became a succession of BMW GSs.

I knew little of the GK history and was pleased to find your website. Thank you for reminding me of the happy times spending too much money there.

Of course, a problem with being an anaesthetist is that after my last night on-call in the Birth Suite at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital the midwives took several rolls of hand towel and wrapped my bike in them. Bit of a surprise to find that the next morning as I left to go home, and I was wondering why they were all coming downstairs to say goodbye to the Pommy gasman.
