Gus Kuhn and John Mills in 'Britannia of Billingsgate'
The film 'Britannia of Billingsgate' featuring speedway racing scenes with Gus Kuhn, Colin Watson & Claude Rye is filmed at Lea Bridge. The film was a vehicle for music hall star Violet Loraine. She plays a cockney who becomes rich and famous because of her voice. The story shows how this affects the family. Part of the plot features her son, played by the young John Mills, who uses the money to indulge his passion for dirt track racing.

August 7th, Mon Bank Hol: Home vs Sheffield (NL). Two wins and a 2nd in heat 4. 10 pts. In heat 1 Blain had a great match and his victory over Huxley was well earned. In heat 4 he was firmly blocked by Gus on the first bend. He got into a mess but corrected it and set off in pursuit. He caught Gus and then harried him persistently first one side then the other. It paid off to give Blain two brilliant wins.

October 16th at Wimbledon. Unofficial England v Overseas match. Gus was Captain of England. Without their captain Harold "Tiger" Stevenson, injured at Lea Bridge two days earlier, England were nevertheless dominant in the early stages and led 24-11 after five races. Then they collapsed, and Overseas won all the remaining four heats to gain a slender one point victory. England held a two point lead going into the final race, but when Kitchen fell on the final bend of the last race while chasing Case, it was all over. This match used the 4-2-1-0 scoring system, which was standard throughout 1933. Gus scored two points and had a fall, and didn't compete in his third heat.

  • Belle Vue won the National League and Wimbledon were 2nd.

  • Wembley won the London Cup final against Wimbledon.
