Prior to joining Gus Kuhn in 1958 at the age of 25, Johnny worked for Taylor Matterson in Tooting.

He rode in scrambles for over two years before turning his attention to speedway. He was a regular speedway rider from 1959 to 1963 with the New Cross, Exeter and Weymouth teams. He also rode for Rayleigh and was among the line up in 1960 when the Essex team won the provincial league championship. Johnny also travelled to Holland during his speedway career and took part in a Golden Helmet meeting.

The big bike image projected by the Gus Kuhn set-up in the 70's and 80's pleased him because he said he found far more satisfaction working on the "big-uns" than the "tiddlers".

He was made workshop foreman in 1967 and was still working for the company as Service Manager when it was sold in 1989.
